Fireworks

Fireworks
We are thinking of visiting Beaver Island and will be leaving July 3. Do people shoot off individual fireworks on the island, or is it just the fireworks display on July 4? Our dog is deathly afraid of fireworks so it will impact whether we decide to visit. Thanks!!

Hi. It would depend on where you would be staying. There is a fireworks display in the harbor and there are individuals who do shoot off their own. We stay about 15 minutes inland and I can honestly say I don't hear many if any. Hope this helps.

Hello we stay on Sand Bay and during the fourth celebration there are fireworks almost everyday it is legal to shoot them off. Inland as earlier said is a much quieter situation, our one dog had issues but we closed the doors and windows and turned on the music he was fine. Most activity is between dark 9:30 - 11:00 p.m.

FYI-It is illegal to take fireworks on the ferry or the planes-federal law. I suppose the only way to legally bring fireworks is by private boat. Check with St. James and Peaine Townships on a new ordinance that was designed to prohibit individual fireworks. Enjoy the harbor light show!

That's good to know fireworks are not permitted on the ferry or plane. It will not prevent people from putting them in their luggage and on the plane or ferry. We live in a world of no ethics or morals or responsibility. It's a sad truth but it's real. I'm sure no one wants the island to burn to the ground because of some silly fireworks. Let the pros handle the fireworks and adhere to the law.

We’ll, I’m glad to hear that the townships now have ordinances in place for fireworks, but is it enforced? When I lived there it was like the wild, wild, west…anytime, anywhere, anybody, shooting off the big ones. Vigilante-style, I’d jump in my vehicle
and follow the noise until I found the offenders. One time, it was the cop himself (our Beaver Island deputy), no kidding! We had to call the cops (on the cop!) to get a good night’s sleep.
