My very positive experience with BI Health Center

Post by Mike Finn »

I purchased a home on Beaver Island in the spring of 2017. I did not use the services of the Health Center until Sept. of this year when I fell and broke my wrist. The nurse saw me pretty quickly and took an x-ray. She said it was hard to read in my case and called in Dr. John Martin, who like me is a retiree and seasonal resident of the island. I was surprised to find that Dr. Martin was an orthopedic surgeon who specialized in hands. He read the x-ray, examined me, and put a cast on my wrist.

I was out of there 1 hour and 15 min. after arriving. I am very satisfied with the care I received and amazed to find such care on a remote island with a small population. I think we are all fortunate to have this resource on the island and I thank all the people who make it possible.

Mike
Thank you for sharing. Our family has experienced the same positive experience with the BIRHC. Especially my 93 yr father-in-law which moved in with us 3yrs ago. The health center comes out to our house regularly not just for medical issues but for monthly care/tests that he requires. He comments often that he didn't get this kind of medical care when he lived downstate and that they would have never come to his home to care for him. Although we live on a remote island we have a wonderfully committed staff that are there for us 24/7. Dr. Martin particularly has put in countless endless hours of his own time for us, we are lucky to have such people. Through the years I have watched the BIRHC grow and make inprovements and truly appreciate their time and effort.

I would agree totally with both Mike and Andy's experience with the BIRHC. I have seen improvement over the past several years with services provided to Beaver Island, no argument there. I fully anticipate those subjects will be brought forward during the debate with no challenge from me. However, many of us know there still are serious issues needing to be addressed, accepted, corrected by the board with improvements made. These should be the essence of Dr. Martin's public debate. I hope the focus will be positive on the "how" business, not "what" business, is conducted with more transparency and involvement with the public who support the BIRHC with tax dollars.
