Goop in the harbor

Does anyone know what the white goop washing ashore along the public beach is?

There was grey-white glop drying (and smelling) on the beach at Iron Ore Bay last Saturday. I thought it might be an algal bloom.

It is quite harmless and worth its weight in gold when used in perfume production. It has been washing up on Whiskey Island for a week or so now. Haven't seen it in years. The term is "ambergris", look it up online. Now that whales are making a come back in the Great Lakes, we should be seeing more of it on our shores.

A trip to any public beach on a holiday weekend will convince
you that Michigan is indeed home to many whales!
Some even manage a trip to Walmart.

Once they're "beached" they tend to lack mobility, if you
stay out of range of the pectoral fins they seem pretty
harmless.
