I tried this last winter. How about an open water swim somewhere on the island.
Harbor Springs and now Mackinaw have these and they appear to be very successful. The island is a perfect spot for this endeavor.
Harbor Springs had theirs the first week end of August with a one , two and three mile course. These events are getting more popular, especially if you have a quarter or half mile course for the kids.
Perhaps our friends at the Chamber can run with this.

Let me add a little more info.......Harbor Springs has kayakers and small boats along the course , along with large balloons for the swimmers to sight upon. When they finish the race there are baked goods, fruit, drinks available............same as if you were in a road race. But the island is such a spectacular representative of what Michigan has and has to offer, it seems a no brainer.
Try to get the boat to offer a reduced rate for confirmed swimmers, same with lodging.....this sport is gaining in popularity because some of us don't want the knee issues associated with age and running....swimming offers an alternative for some.
