OFFICIAL SNOW TOTAL
There have been a lot of questions about the amount of snow we have received this winter. Now before I hear about more on the south end, less on the north end.. I'm in the middle and am the location of the official National Weather Service Cooperative Observer post for the island... that said.....
Yesterday, Sunday, we OFFICIALLY passed the 100 inch mark for Beaver Island. The record snowfall for an entire winter on Beaver Island is 138 inches.... we still a lot of winter to go. Think we will pass it? Maybe we should have a contest about how many inches we will end up with for the entire winter... Or a date when we will officially pass the 138" mark. No money involved.. just fun.
So take a guess and add it here on both---- how much total and what date we will pass 138".

Snow total
My guess for the total amount is 142" with 138" being surpassed on 2-27-14.
On a positive note, our lake levels should rise significantly with the ice coverage and snow pack.

TV 9 and 10 news error
The 9 and 10 news reported on snowfall for the area and included BI, reporting a total of 48". Please realize that was at the end of December and they did not contact anyone on the island to verify the information. We are now about 109" and another storm due in tomorrow.

Map of ice coverage
If you haven't seen the NOAA map yet, it's really amazing. Shows ice coverage for all the great lakes in grey and black, and also shows water temps in colors.
