Stand with Laura Green: Let's Beat Cancer Together

Our beautiful friend, neighbor and loved one Laura Green has just heard the words no one ever wants to hear: “You have cancer.” She has been diagnosed with Metastatic Invasive Cancer, and her life has changed in an instant.

Laura is now facing a long and demanding treatment plan. Over the next six months, she will undergo aggressive chemotherapy, first two powerful medications for three months, followed by two different powerful medications for an additional three months. When that phase is complete, she will endure major surgery to remove the growth. It’s important to know that the surgery may not end with the removal of the tumor; depending on how her body responds to chemotherapy, and the results of upcoming genetic testing, she may ultimately need a mastectomy or even a double mastectomy. After surgery, she will most likely continue with radiation treatment. This will be a fight that spans at least a year, testing her strength in ways she never imagined.

Anyone who knows Laura knows her kindness, humor, intelligence, and the strength she carries. She is not someone who asks for help easily. But the reality is that this diagnosis brings with it not only emotional and physical challenges, but also overwhelming financial strain. She will be facing a significant loss of income, along with unplanned household needs that go far beyond everyday expenses.

Right now, Laura deserves one thing above all else: the ability to focus on healing without the crushing fear of how she will manage everything else.

That is why we are asking, humbly and with full hearts as her friends, for your help. Your donation will lift an enormous burden from Laura and her husband Mark. It will give them both a form of stability in a moment when everything feels uncertain. It will specifically give her room to breathe without worry. It will give her the strength that comes from knowing she is not facing this alone.

If you are able, please donate. If you cannot donate, please share. Every gesture of support matters more than you know.

Thank you for standing with Laura as she enters this fight. Your kindness will carry her through the darkest days and remind her that she is surrounded by love and a community that extends far beyond Beaver Island's 55 square miles.

From Laura today...

I want to start with a very large thank you to everyone who has shown so much support for myself and Mark during this troubling time. We have truly been humbled and overwhelmed by the love, kindness, and generosity that have been sent our way. Heading into this holiday season, we’re reminded just how many things we have to be thankful for, and the incredible people in our lives are at the very top of that list.
For those who may not know yet, in October I was diagnosed with breast cancer. After weeks of testing, I finally have a clearer picture of what I’m up against: metastatic invasive carcinoma, triple negative, stage 3B/C, grade 3. There is a fairly large tumor in my right breast, and a lymph node in my right axilla (armpit) is positive as well...which is why it’s labeled “metastatic.”
The good news: my CT scans did not detect any spread throughout my chest, abdomen, or pelvis, and we are holding tight to that.
The plan is to begin 6 months of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (chemo before surgery) starting December 3rd. The hope is to shrink this (insert your favorite expletive here) thing down as much as possible so that my doctors can determine the best surgical approach afterward.
We are ready. We are focused. And we are fighting this with everything we’ve got.
Thank you again, from the bottom of our hearts, for every message, gift, donation, prayer, and kind word. Your support means more than you know, and one day we hope to be able to pay this generosity forward.
