Re: Support for Timber Harvest Opportunities on Beaver Island
Dear Mr. Wood,
I am writing to express my support for active timber harvesting on Beaver Island as outlined in the Beaver Island Implementation Plan, and to encourage the Department of Natural Resources (or appropriate agency) to pursue these efforts proactively.
Sustainable forest management on Beaver Island is not only an ecological necessity, but also a proven tool for funding wildlife programs, supporting deer management, and revitalizing the local economy. Responsible harvesting generates revenue that directly supports wildlife management, while creating habitat diversity critical for healthy deer and other game species. Without periodic timber harvests, the island’s forests risk stagnation, contributing to pressures that harm both wildlife and forest regeneration.
Timber harvesting also provides meaningful opportunities for local residents to participate in and benefit from the stewardship of their forests. Expanding harvest opportunities today would help ensure that Beaver Island residents can continue the tradition of sustainable forestry while supporting local livelihoods.
Supporters of this initiative encourage the Department to:
1. Increase the Scope of Planned Harvests – Larger, more frequent harvests will accelerate forest renewal, improve habitat for deer and other species, and provide greater revenue for wildlife management programs.
2. Promote Local Employment and Utilization – Prioritize contracts that engage island residents and contractors, ensuring economic benefit stays within the community.
3. Enhance Long-Term Sustainability – Position Beaver Island as a model for how managed timber harvest can align with ecological goals and rural livelihoods.
We (or I) stand ready to support and collaborate with the Department to help implement these efforts. With the experience and knowledge of sustainable forestry practices, we can ensure Beaver Island’s forests remain healthy, its wildlife populations balanced, and its residents connected to their natural resource heritage.
Thank you for your leadership and for considering this important work. I (or we) look forward to continued collaboration to promote responsible forest management on Beaver Island.
Sincerely,
