You are likely mistaken that it was a cat. Maybe a black squirrel. Raptors can not carry away an animal that weighs more than they do. Red-tailed hawks and great-horned owls average 2-3 pounds, whereas an adult cat averages 10-11 pounds.

Maybe... a small cat and large eagle. But, I don't think anyone wants to learn about the horrible demise of their beloved pet on the beaver island forum. It is better they don't know. What purpose does it serve? And it is not as common as the urban legends portend.

Guard: Are you suggesting that coconuts migrate?
Arthur: Not at all! They could be carried.
Guard: (indcredulous) What, a swallow, carrying a coconut?
Arthur: It could grip it by the husk!
Guard: It's not a question of where 'e grips it! It's a simple question of
weight ratios! A five-ounce bird could *not* carry a one-pound
coconut!
