Ballot Issues for Tuesday, August 6

Post by Pam Grassmick »

While I was unable to find a ballot on the Peaine Township or the Charlevoix County websites for the upcoming election on Tuesday, I did find this article related to Tuesday's election in the Petoskey News/Charlevoix Courier. www.petoskeynews.com/charlevoix/beaver-island-to...

You will need to put "Petoskey News Review Beaver Island Ballot 2019" into your search engine and the article should come up. Good Luck!

Copied from the Petoskey News article:
BEAVER ISLAND — Island residents will be heading to the polls on Tuesday.

Peaine and St. James townships — the two governmental jurisdictions which make up the island off the shore of Charlevoix — are the only two communities in Charlevoix county which have measures on the ballot for the local elections Aug. 6. Most are millage renewals in Peaine Township, although a proposal for funding of the Beaver Island District Library includes both townships.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. After the polls close, they will be tabulated by each township and sent to the county.

“Since it’s out on the island, we’ll collect them the next morning, because they come by plane. There won’t be any planes that late at night (on election night) so they’ll come on the first plane in the morning,” said Julia Drost, chief deputy clerk for the county.

Here is a rundown of all of the millages on the ballot:

Operational millage (Peaine Township)
This is a proposal to renew the existing four-mill levy, which expired in 2018. It is a five-year millage. If approved and levied in full, the millage would generate an estimated $274,293 in revenue for the general operation of Peaine Township when first levied in 2019.

Transfer station millage (Peaine Township)
This proposal would renew the two-mill levy for operating the township’s transfer station. The levy expired in 2018. The five-year measure is estimated to bring in $137,146 in revenue for the township its first year, of which a portion may be disbursed to units of local government as the Township Board determines appropriate.

Fire protection millage (Peaine Township)
This five-year millage would renew the one-mill levy for fire protection services that expired in 2018. The millage would generate an estimated $68,573 in its first year, and a portion of that could disbursed to the Beaver Island Emergency Services Authority as the Township Board deems appropriate.

Medical center millage (Peaine Township)
This would restore the two-mill levy for the operation of the island’s medical center. The levy expired in 2018. It is a five year millage, and would generate an estimated $137,146 in 2019.

District library millage (Peaine and St. James townships)
This measure would collect a one-mill levy from residents of both Peaine and St. James Townships for four years for the continued operation of the Beaver Island District Library. The measure replaces the .9864 mill levy that expired in 2018, and restores the amount to a full mill. It is estimated to bring in $116,000 in its first year.
