Sharing Solutions Through Island Exchanges

Please join us at the Beaver Island Community Center on Thursday, April 28th from 3-5:30 p.m. for an Open House with the Office of Great Lakes, Maine's Island Institute, and Maine islanders.

Meeting Objectives:
1) Information sharing-to summarize the major project activities to date, including progress towards advancing the Beaver Island priority issue areas and longer term coordination opportunities; and
2) Engagement-to seek support, interest, and involvement by Beaver Islanders and others to assist with project components going forward.

The Beaver Island community will be hosting the Office of Great Lakes and Maine islanders during April 26th-29th. As part of the knowledge exchange, Maine islanders will be coming to meet with Beaver Islanders. A full schedule of meetings are planned to share Beaver Island's ideas about festivals, governance structure, education, island planning, and more.

Our island guests from the Office of Great Lakes include: Jon Allan, Director of the Office of Great Lakes and Matt Preisser, Lake Michigan Coordinator, and Rachel Cromell, State of Michigan's Outreach Communications Director.

Our Maine island guests are: Karen Burns, Director of Community Development with Maine's Island Institute
Shey Conover, Islesboro Resident, School Policy Board Member and Vice President of Programs at the Island Institute
Andy Dorr, Vinalhaven's Island Manager and past Island Fellow
Yvonne Thomas, Vinalhaven Resident, Board Member in Partners in Island Education, Small Business Owner and Education Director at the Island Institute.

Join us for the third part of this project of sharing solutions between Beaver Island and Maine island communities on Thursday, April 28th. News on the Net has offered to broadcast the event from the Community Center for those off island.

Will there be anyone speaking about the high property taxes and the effect it has on the beaver Island economy? Perhaps someone with a economics back ground? Is Beaver Island financially sustainable?
