The entire Green Family and friends as well as the community of Beaver Island are in our thoughts and Prayers. We were never fortunate to meet Mr. Green in person, but we learned much of him through Kevin, Snowe and the kids and are better for it.

Respectfully submitted,

The Runnels Family

My sympathies to the Green Family. I wish I had a funny story to share but none comes to mind.
I do remember taking many trips on the Beaver Islander in the 70's with Russell at the helm.
So Russell may a warm soft wind be at your back and and calm seas prevail as you cross the Bar.

My sincerest condolences to the entire Green family; I had the good fortune to talk with Russell via telephone last week when I had called up to Rose's house to speak with Gus. Russell happened to be there and I asked to speak with him, he and I chatted for a few minutes and upon closing I said " play a couple games of cribbage with Georgie when you get up there" .....she really liked Russell and enjoyed his kidding and big smile.

When I was sailing with the Ford fleet back in the 80's I would talk to the Beaver Islander whenever we were in the Northern end of Lake Michigan or in the Straits, Russell was always happy to hear a familiar voice on the other end of the radio and I was too, always inquiring "how's your ma"? where ya headin? "I used to run in there along time ago" etc. etc.( when he sailed on the Lakers).

He was a great man and in speaking with Rose and Gus this morning; they will miss there 4 o'clock visit most everyday ( Gus always said, you can set your watch by Russell's arrival ( ever the Captain.......keeping her on schedule), but they were able to spend some good time with a great brother and uncle over these last few days.
May fair winds and following seas take you home. God bless,
Tony Gatliff

What a moving tribute it was this afternoon as Russell came home. Boats from town set out to meet the ferry as it came around the point and followed it in. As the Emerald Isle backed into her berth, each boat gave a final salute to a fine sailor - three longs, two shorts. As Skip Duhamel commented, "We had to welcome the Captain home".

I keep thinking about how good Uncle Russell was with kids. A couple of instances come to mind:

We were at my dad's wake at Holy Cross, and I was surrounded by five very sad little kids. Time went on and I noticed that Nick was no longer by me. I scanned the church to find him in a pew, with Uncle Russ on one side and Uncle Tony on the other (a privileged place for any young boy to be!), so I knew he was in good hands. The next time I noticed Nick by my side he was all grins, telling about how Uncle Russell kept asking him, "Who kissed out your front teeth?"

Then this past summer when we visited the Island for the first time in a long time, we rented a cabin right next door to Uncle Russ, so got to see him a lot. He spent time with us up at the farm, too, and even walked back to my dad's place, telling us stories and describing how it all used to look when they were growing up. He fixed all of the kids up with bikes so they could have fun riding around. The day we were leaving we went to say goodbye. Uncle Russell said, "Well, I think that at least one of you should stay with me. I really need a good cook." Our youngest, Burke, was volunteering himself right away. I thought it was amazing that after spending only a few hours together, a 7 year old would have happily sent his family away to stay with Uncle Russell!

Little acts of kindness add up to make a big impression. If all of us could be a little more like Russell Green, the world would be a better place.

My sympathies to all of my cousins along with their children and grandchildren. You are in my prayers.

This Sunday morning has me remembering another Sunday morning from years ago.

Joy and Russ were down here, probably visiting Beth Ann and I spotted the 2 of them at Mass at St. Mike's in Remus. I caught up to them in the vestibule and as I was giving Joy a hug Russell said in his strong voice, " I didn't think you went to Mass anymore. I heard you turned Protestant!!" People that I've known for over 30 years at that parish stared in our direction. I tried to beat a path past Fr. Dan who always stood on the front steps to greet everyone and Russell kept right after me. "It's true isn't it? You turned Protestant?"
Russell Green; it has been a pleasure to have known you.
