Hello Friends,
Where do bad rainbows go? The answer will come after this update about Charlevoix County COA services on Beaver Island.
As the Site Coordinator, I am committed to advocating for and improving services on Beaver Island with the resources provided by Charlevoix County. I want to share information that may help clarify the current state of the COA meal program here on the island.
Meal Vouchers Update:
Currently, Beaver Island Community School accepts meal vouchers. Additionally, the COA offers cold alternative and frozen meals from the mainland. I have order forms for these options available at the COA office and during activities at the BIC Center and other locations. All individuals aged 60 and older, or their spouses, must complete the 2024-2025 NAPIS form and sign the Code of Conduct to participate. If you haven’t done this yet, please see me.
FaceBook questions:
I’ve received some questions about information posted on the St. James Township Facebook page. While I cannot comment on that, I can acknowledge the dedicated efforts of Bobbi Welke and Lori Taylor-Blitz. They’ve been actively following up on the October 4, 2024, COA Advisory Committee meeting at the BIC Center and continue advocating for equitable meal access for seniors on Beaver Island, striving for parity with the mainland. Their work is commendable, and our community is fortunate to have their support.
Who to contact:
Please remember that all official COA announcements about meals or programs will come directly from Charlevoix County COA or from me as the Site Coordinator. For questions or concerns, please contact Charlevoicx County COA director Amy Weiland or COA Assisitant Director Sheri Shepard at 231-237-0103 or general questions can be directed to Lonnie Allen at 231-448-2124. I also encourage everyone to visit the mainland senior centers if you have the opportunity.
You may also contact Charlevoix County Commissioner Joshua Chamberlain, who is the County Commissioner on the Charlevoix County COA Advisory Committee and Charlevoix County Commissioner Scott Hankins, who is the elected official that represents the residents of Beaver Island in District 5. Each of these elected officials should be contacted when regarding Beaver Island and its COA program. Each of them should respond to your inquiries!
