Understanding Carpenter Ants

April 19, 2013 7:31 pm 1 Comment
Carpenter Ants will travel 1,000 ft. away from their colony to forage their food. Carpenter ants are one of the largest types of ants. They can be as small as 1/16 of an in and grown to a ½ inch in size. The queen carpenter ant of the nest is usually larger around an inch long. You may also see swarming carpenter ants that are flying ants that are often mistaken for termites, they appear very similar. These ants may appear in your home and move toward windows trying to get out. These are the reproductive ants that are trying to get outside to produce satellite nests. After approximately a week they will exhaust themselves and dye. There no that treatment will do to get rid of these ants however, this indicates that there is a working nest in your home or structure and it needs to be treated.

Carpenter ants will bite on contact, however they are not poisonous. Carpenter ants eat things with protein & sugar. They also like honeydew, jelly, & meats they can find in your home.

Depending on the weather, usually from late March, to early May, on a nice day carpenter ants nests can be â??woke upâ?￾ and the ants may suddenly start appearing in your home looking for food most likely in your kitchen because there is snow on the ground and they canâ??t go outside.

If the ants become overwhelming before Hogarthâ??s Pest Control Company can get there you may wash the countertops or if you have to you may use baits over the counter. DO NOT SPRAY OR USE GRANULES if another company or homeowner has used sprays or granules from over the counter, they will affect the outcome and how long it can take for our treatment to work. The baits will help to kill some of the ants off until we can get there. Carpenter ants are EXTREMELY smart, they can tell when their fellow ants are dying off, the other ants will pick this up and the other ants wonâ??t come to the area anymore therefore, they will just work so you cannot see them anymore such as going outside to get their food or moving to another area of your home. Do not think that the bait is going to kill the nest off because it is only going to kill some of the worker ants that you are seeing. There are hundreds or even thousands more in your walls.

Getting Rid Of Carpenter Ants With Our Pest Control Services

When Hogarthâ??s Pest Control come to your home just to do an exterior preventative treatment for all crawling insects and bees, wasps, and hornets, if it is not known that there is a pre existing carpenter ant infestation in the walls, this treatment will forge the ants out of the walls and will block them inside of the structure. In that case, Hogarthâ??s will have to spray inside to get rid of the problem.

When Hogarthâ??s comes to treat your carpenter ant issue, it can take up to 21 days for the nest to completely die off, depending on the size of the nest. It is important not to kill the ants, as you seem them. It is imperative for the ants to cross the product and transfer it back to the nest.

Homeowners can do their own inspection for carpenter ants after 2pm on a nice day is when they tend to be active the most. If you look to the outside corners of your home you may see the trails of ants. It takes about 15 minutes to do a proper carpenter ant inspection and if an ant is seen you need to stop and look carefully and you will notice a trail of ants of the house. DO NOT SPRAY THEIR TRAIL THEY ARE JUST GOING TO MOVE. ANYTHING OVER THE COUNTER IS GOING TO BE detected causing the ants to move to a different corner and if you continue to spray all the corners until they are gone, they will forge back inside so you cannot see them making the homeowner think they are gone, but indeed they are trapped inside and will not be able to go outside to find food and in some cases they will become cannibals and start eating each other to survive in your home or structure. Once you have a carpenter ant infestation it is VERY important to have Hogarthâ??s Pest Control Company spray a preventative treatment each spring this will block from reinfesting the structure.

How You Can Prevent Against Carpenter Ant Infestations

The homeowner can prevent against carpenter ant infestations by correcting moisture problems, trimming tree branches so they donâ??t touch the roof that will give the carpenter ants an avenue to infest in your home. You must clean gutters regularly because they can get backed up and overspill water onto your home or decking and that is a call for carpenter ants to infest.

Solitary Wasps: Cicada Killers, Mud Daubers

There are many species of wasps (yellow jackets, paper wasps, hornets, mud daubers, spider wasps and cicada killers) and all are beneficial by virtue of their predatory habits. However, since these insects are capable of stinging they can cause a considerable nuisance.

Wasps can be divided into two groups based on their habits. Social wasps construct small to large-sized nests of grey paper which may contain 50 to 5,000 individuals. On the other hand, solitary wasps are not colonial and they nest in the ground or in tubular mud nests. Solitary wasps differ from the social wasps in nesting habits and life cycle. Solitary wasps have no worker caste; the queens "care" for their own young. Therefore, solitary wasps usually have a single nest, or a small group of nest. Solitary wasp queens use their sting to paralyze their prey (flies, caterpillars, spiders, etc.), rather than to defend their nest(s). As a result, solitary wasps are non-aggressive and rarely sting (unless touched or caught in the clothing).

Two species of solitary wasps are most frequently encountered--mud daubers and cicada killers. The mud dauber wasps are medium to large-sized, shiny black or metallic blue-black wasps with slender abdomens. They build finger-like nests of mud. The nests are usually attached to flat, vertical surfaces. The queens provision their nests with paralyzed prey and then leave the young to develop on their own.

Control can be achieved by killing the offending adult wasps with a fly swatter or "wasp or hornet" aerosol spray (most contain resmethrin and/or pyrethrins). Remove and destroy the mud nests to prevent emergence of the developing young.

Cicada killers are large (1 1/2 inch or longer) wasps with dark brown bodies and black abdomens with yellow markings. They are ground nesters which prefer sandy or other well-drained soils, and the queens dig tunnel-like chambers. The adults are active in the summer, usually after early July. They are frequently seen flying about in the nesting areas. The queens search for cicadas to provision their nests (hence the name). Each chamber in the nest (often as many of 16) is supplied with a paralyzed cicada and a wasp egg. When the larva hatches it feeds on the cicada. Later the larva pupates and the wasp hibernates in the nest as an immature adult.

You made some really good points there. I looked on
the web for more info about the issue and found most people will go along
