I hesitate to join this discussion because it has become so rancorous, but I want to assure any interested persons that much continuing study and research is going on with regard to restoring the Whiskey Point Light House. The Great Lakes Lighthouse Association (GLLKA) is a partner and is exploring methods of funding along with St. James Twp. At least twice during past Museum Weeks, GLLKA has held informational meetings and programs with very, very few interested persons attending.

As far as painting being the answer - all research points to the last paint job and the sealing of all air vents is what has caused all the deterioration of the bricks.

Please contact the proper authorities and learn the correct information.

the discussion at hand is not about who is who, or peoples idenditys.it is about the preservation of ALL OF OUR LIGHTHOUSE....
somthing needs to be done......

Cpt. galen bartels

born and raised on bi and yes i do own property..100 ton master /ab unlimited/stcw95/certified trouble maker/and historical society volunteer.......my spelling is not the best...neither is my typing....somthing must be done about the preservation of whiskey point lighthouse besides .....talking/studies/finger pointing......

the light is still a nav. aid .if it was not, it would not be listed in the notice too mariners and all other maritime publications.the light is on all charts as a lighted beacon.i myself have used said light as a aid to navigation.some years ago there was a mass excavation of the soil around the light too remove contaminated soil....said soil was removed from b.i. by means of dumpsters ,to a certified landfill on the mainland.....at a cost of god knows what.my point is that a study was needed at the cost of 10 to 15 thousand dollars in order to execute this project.the reasoning behind this project was because of contaminated soil due to lead based paint.being of somewhat soundmind ,my opinion is, maybe the powers at be should have scraped the existing paint off of the light before spending the money on the project.and, to all that are concerned....all that lights OUR lighthouse is nothing but a 500 watt halogen bulb, that can be found at any hardware store.there is no fancy bulb/fresno lens .i myself have changed it.actually there are three bulbs at different heights that produce several intensitys,to accomidate different candelwatt powers.a red plexiglass exterior are all that produce the red light.moisture is the lights nemisis.it was painted with the wrong product years ago.if one can deal with the millions of flys, you can be the one who opens and shuts the ventilation windows during the season changes.during my ATWILL employment with the townships,it became my job.as far as i know st. james twp. has the key.

my name is .......Cpt galen bartels

Mark Hoogterp, Grand Rapids; 25 year summer vacationer, lifetime BIHS member, 8th place overall inaugural BI Half Marathon, friend of many, foe of few. I was simply opining that I thought coolpix soapbox was on thin ice. I rarely comment on this forum but watch it daily. Sorry if you took my comment in some other context.

Thanks Hayseeder for the input and seems that you are sticking to the point and topic at hand unlike the others who wish to know identities.

Very informative Hayseed, at least you don't feel the need for a pseudonym. Why should anyone dignify an answer to a ghost?

Considering Rambo is concerned with identities and not with the topic I suggest then that they might go and harrass others considering they haven't beeen involved in anyway constructively and instead dragged sidebars into what personalities and identities and now calling names.

Hayseeder and two others have made the most comments that have been of a constructive and informative nature about the lack of interest that most seem to share about the apathy of those that claim they are proud of this history of the island yet not really wanting to do a thing. And if this is the case then might as well just let it crumble and fall in ruin.

Well said Richard & Amy Burris! Even though Joyce gave an excellent explanation there still seems to be a need to ridicule, etc.!
Wow.....It is Feruaury.....good thing the groundhog saw his shadow!

Thank You Richard and Amy Burris for all your donations....physically and financially...you are a great asset to the island and much appreciated!

Yes, Diane we must endeavor to preserve this historical treasure; there seems to be MUCH TO impede it. Sure hope we can get the grant or at least some inertia to accomplish a complete restoration.

Fund raising

Post by Brad »

Dick and Amy or anyone who knows,

Is there a fund for the restoration of the lighthouse that we can contribute to? I'm sorry we haven't been following this as closely as we should have.
