Beaver Queen

Anyone know if the Beaver Queen is for sale? Interested in snapping her up! I know she's still around, but I can't recall who owns her these days.

Birthday Greetings!

Once again, on the Feast of Saint Patrick, Beaver Island can tip it's hat to an important member of the family, the ferry "South Shore". At 62 years young, she still proudly bears the shamrock emblem on her stack as she rests in Chicago after many long years of faithful service to the Isla...

It's not that another vessel by that name is in service at this time, but more a sign of respect. Emerald Isle I was a very important boat to the island, being the first hull specifically built for the brand new BIBCO. She did make two appearances after being sold, when ATCo loaned her to BIBCO when...

M/V Emerald Isle anniversary

Best wishes to the crew of the Emerald Isle, who celebrates the 9th Anniversary of her maiden voyage from Beaver Island to Charlevoix today, December 4th. I still remember standing on the pier waiting for her to peak out from the snow storm. Quite the day- *Still thinks she should be named Emerald I...

Happy Birthday to the Daughter of St. Patrick!

Once again, on this great day, a formal salute, Three long and Two short to our most Irish ferry that ever served Beaver Island, the mighty South Shore. Best wishes to her as she sits in the good ol' Green Chicago River this hallowed day! Launched this day in 1945 in Cleveland Ohio.

Hi cousin! Right you are. I read the article and thought it was in jest, til I saw updated pictures of the dock. Far cry from the "old days" (and I'm 24!) when you could wander out on the dock as the boat was arriving, and fish off the end at the end of the day. The mighty South Shore was ...

Shirley,

Many thanks for the information. I greatly appreciate it! Glad to know she is still being put to good use, but do let Don know that when he's ready, he has a buyer! Extend Christmas greetings to him, and of course to you as well!

Best wishes,
Sean

Any clue if she's been in the water recently?

Thanks for the heads up!

Sean: I've been trying to get ahold of Capt. Steve Pagles, her current owner, but yup thats her a few years back. The bow and stern are so unique! Anna: I think there have been 6 vessels on the lakes named "Chippewa." The one you have located was a very early vessel in the Arnold Transit F...

Legends Live on

Let us take time to remember those who sail the waters of the Great Lakes. From island ferries to the big lakers, each are commendable for their service. Especially this day, when the Edmund Fitzgerald was lost, a prayer for all sailors who have lost their life. May they all find peaceful waters.

It will be interesting having both Mackinaws in the same place! From what I understand, most of the Mackinaw 83's permanent mooring has been completed. She will operate along side of her younger sibling for the winter and then be retired in the spring. Having toured the Juniper class boats (Hollyhoc...

The North Shore has been gone for a number of years. She was built in about 30 days to replace another vessel of the same design, also named North Shore. The first boat with that name was lost at sea in a storm. This new North Shore was built by Burger Boat Co. in Manitowoc WI. Her begining was just...

"South Shore" ferry memorabilia

As it's evident, I am a fan of the M/V South Shore. She was my first love of boats and the old days (when they let you out on the ferry dock after hours) I remember spending lots of time hoping to some day get to crew aboard her. Missed it by a few years, but still glad to have had her there. I am i...

In a sense, the Mackinaw II is a replacement for the Acacia. While she won't be stationed in Charlevoix, Mackinaw II will pick up all the buoy tending work Acacia does; something that the Mackinaw 83 cannot do. However, the Hollyhock- Port Huron, the Alder - Duluth and Mackinaw II - Cheboygan are no...
