To mcdonoughdiane: Fair questions, let me attempt to answer them in the order in which they were asked: Yes, me and yes! Now if I can, back to my question. The mission of the Beaver Island Chamber of Commerce is to promote tourism with members' dues along with protecting the natural beauty and natur...

Dear AEW: I agree with you that if Michigan is to recover economically it will not be by tourism alone. I'm hoping that in the new Governor's support of Pure Michigan (PM) he is not over looking jobs and growth created by promoting our small businesses, manufacturing, construction, home sales and th...

A fact of modern politics is that the cover up is generally more dastardly than the original offense. Back when there was honor in politics, politicians had the integrity to own up to their actions, right or wrong. Unfortunately today, PR people and attorneys advise politicians to shut up and cover ...

Jimmy, I absolutely agree that anyone running for public office should be commended. However in becoming a public servant, one takes an oath to serve in the publics' best interest. When an individual or even another public official believes that this covenant with the people has been violated, by co...

Excellent report and review. There is obviously a lot of information to digest. The question that first comes to mind is how could this type of operating if not incompetence go on for so long undetected or unreported, were there no checks and balances? I have to say that the trail of accountability ...

Please let me apologize; my e-mail started buzzing right after posting my last post. I realize that the township supervisor is new to the job and I did not mean to imply he was the one to blame for the assessment failure. It obviously goes back to previous administrations. A review of what happened ...

Kenneth is correct that in Michigan the township supervisor is the assessor but may choose to hire or appoint an assessor. Regardless of how the job is administered the township supervisor is the person ultimately responsible for all township assessments. I say this only regard to going back to dete...

One attorney representing both townships is definately a concern for the townships but greater fault lies with the attorney. The attorney should have never taken on both townships as clients. Doing such would not only be inappropriate but highly unethical. One attorney or one firm could represent mu...

Please allow me to correct my earlier post on Michigan Township Law. I checked with our township attorney, aka, my brother-in-law, and the township supervisor is the highest ranking person of authority representing the township and board. However, sometimes if the supervisor is not a strong or effec...

If I am correct, Michigan law provides that the township clerk's position is that of the highest authority on the township board and in township governance. The township supervisor is a day to day administrative position between meetings and is a position of title only. I believe the law states that...
