John Mayer/Beaver Island connection

My son (almost 11) is a huge John Mayer fan. A friend who has been known to stretch the truth and who spends more time on the island than we do told us that popular musician John Mayer visited the island during the summer of 2002 and even gave an impromptu performance at the Shamrock. Can anyone confirm (or not) this wild tale? BTW, the reason I thought to ask about Mr. Mayer's Beaver Island connection (or lack thereof) is that I just found out he will be performing near Detroit on 11/29 and bought tickets for my son's upcoming birthday.
