Invasive Species Summit â?? June 14

At Beaver Island community Center from 2 pm to 5 pm

The purpose of this meeting is to inform you of the dangers of invasive species, how to control them and their negative impact on outdoor activities, real estate values, the island economy and our environment. Invasive plants are spreading on almost all private and public lands on our island archipelago. The Beaver Island Association has gathered great speakers to help island property owners understand Invasives and the threats they present, watch for weekly bio postings.

● Invasive plants can decrease your ability to enjoy hunting, fishing, mushroom collecting, bird watching, and other recreational pursuits.

● Invasive plants, if left unchecked, will limit many uses of our islands now and for future generations.

● Invasive plants can harm the natural heritage of our wetlands, fields, forests, lakes, and rivers.

● The longer we wait, the more expensive it will be to control invasive plants.

You can be a part of the solution by learning about Beaver Islandâ??s invasive plants and taking action to prevent their spread.

Since Honeybees are an invasive species and we rely on them for much of our sources of food in this country and some of their forage plants are invasive as well...we really need to take a step back and look at things with logic.

Great comment! Your post points out the complexity that comes with managing Invasives. I can assure you, when we work on developing management plans for a particular invasive and/or a specific area we will be using a holistic lens to decide the appropriate action. It is our goal to maintain a responsible balance for the islandâ??s ecosystem.

Invasive Summit Speaker Line-up:

Shaun Howard,The Nature Conservancy's Coastal Invasive Species Coordinator for Eastern Lake Michigan will join us at the Invasive Species Summit on June 14th from 2-5 p.m. at the Community Center. His presentation will center on the state-wide initiatives and plans for addressing invasive species on our archipelago.

A Michigan native, Shaun earned his B.S. in Zoology through the Lyman Briggs College at Michigan State University. In the summer of 2010 he joined The Nature Conservancy to lead their Dune Restoration Crewâ??s invasive plant control efforts along the shores of Northwest Lower Michigan. His current role is that of Coastal Invasives Coordinator, aligning the invasive plant removal efforts of The Conservancy and other Michigan Dune Alliance partners along the entire Eastern Lake Michigan shoreline.
