St James Campground

Post by Sharolynhunter »

I walked to the campground today and a number of the sites have signs that say "keep out". I was just wondering why. I thought maybe because of the remodel but there is no work going on. Are they actually closed?

The campground is open, but certain sites were closed in anticipation of work beginning on the campground improvement project. As with any state grant program, it always takes longer than you wish -- the good news is that as of last Friday, the township received the final go-ahead from the state to begin work. Actual start date will be set soon.

St James Township Campground Update
St James Township continues to work toward completion of campground improvements using funds from a successful State of Michigan Recreation Passport Grant. Details are still being worked out, but what is certain for the summer 2021 season:
1. Everything is subject to change
2. The day use area to the west of the campground sites will remain accessible throughout the summer and parking there will be improved
3. Rustic Campsites 1 -9 (along the lake side of the loop) will be available for campers to use beginning June 4th, 2021
4. The fee for camping sites for this year will be $15.00/night
5. There is no reservation system this year – it is first come, first served
6. The existing vault toilet will be repaired, power washed and painted inside and out and a portable ADA toilet will be onsite
7. The existing water handpump will be available for use
8. Campers must understand that construction may be happening in the area south of the loop during regular work hours M-F. The township is working with its engineer, McDonough Construction and the state of Michigan grant coordinator to define a timeline to facilitate the following improvements:
a. Excavate and prepare the site for building the Bath House, as grant approved, for construction in the future.
b. Install Type II Well as grant approved.
c. Install Septic and Drain Field as grant approved.
d. Install Electricity to the site as grant approved.
e. Install sidewalks, parking and signs as grant approved
f. Develop a Host Site and two ADA sites as grant approved
g. Install electric service to pedestals at the Host Site, (2) ADA sites and an additional seven (7) camping sites for a total of 10 electrified camp sites.
h. Install fire rings, picnic tables and identification posts as grant approved.
i. Construct an 8x8 outbuilding with treated wood floor to house pressure tank, water heater
j. Plumbing to provide one 6’x6’ ADA outdoor shower base and surround and three 5’x5’ outdoor shower bases and surrounds which will be located between the Bath House site and the Host site.
9. The timeline (yet to be confirmed) for the implementation of the improvements listed above will determine when sites 10 – 18 will be open for use.
