Let's show up and let COA know what our needs are. We send $76000 to COA each year in the form of taxes and receive little that actually allows us to age in place. An additional federal grant to COA provides senior meals. We need in-home assistance, yard work, and a myriad of other things to service our aging populations and make the island an attractive place to purchase a home and to grow old. Our population is significantly older than the rest of the county. The mainland has an extensive list of in-home services for their residents that we don't have access to. We were promised an evaluation of COA on their cuts of in home services which has not happened to date. Not one of the 80+ letters sent have received a response from the county. Let's get our money's worth.

Bump-This meeting is a golden opportunity to meet the new C.O.A. Executive Director. Shirley Gillespie (previous C.O.A. Ex. Director) has been gone for an extended period of time. It would be inspiring to see a group of islanders attend this meeting to show her "island hospitality" and discuss our unique needs.

Approximately 20 people were in attendance at the Commission On Aging (COA) meeting hosted at the Community Center. News on the Net covered the event and a video can be found on that site. Amy Wieland is the new Executive Director and has been in her new position for a couple of months. She was also involved in Leadership Charlevoix. Those present offered many suggestions related to COA services on Beaver Island. Amy seemed genuinely interested in assisting the elders of the island to age in place. Without rehashing the deficiencies of past COA administrations, she walked away with a notebook of ideas. She suggested that individuals reach out to her with concerns or suggestions. Her phone number is 231-237-0103.

Thank you to all who took the time to attend.
