Exciting News From the Historical Society

Post by BI Historical Society »

Beaver Island has been selected to be the first hosting site of six in the State of Michigan to host the traveling Smithsonian Exhibit, â??Water|Waysâ?￾.

The exhibit is a broad overview of water with stories about ecology, culture, history, and stewardship. The museum display explores the diversity and challenges of water, promotes conservation, innovation, and creativity across science, technology, and art to share the global water story.

The Historical Society will stage the exhibit at the St. James Township Hall June 23 - Aug 5, 2018. A Michigan Great Lakes companion exhibit will also travel with the Smithsonian. The state exhibit is offered by The Office of the Great Lakes, Michigan Humanities Council, Cranbrook Institute of Science, Kalamazoo Nature Center, and Michigan State University. It will feature regional and local Great Lakes history, facts, and simple ways for people to be everyday water stewards.

I will be coordinating/creating supplemental programming about our own water community that will share Beaver Island stories and ecological involvement with a broader public audience through partnerships with various eco-organizations on Beaver Island and other state eco-organizations. If you have ideas or suggestions for programming or would like to contribute your time and knowledge please give me a call or stop down at the Printshop to see me.

Here is a couple of links from other states who have hosted the exhibit to give our community a taste of the incoming exhibit.
