Yes indeed! Big fish great fun!

The Outdoor Writer, Eric Sharp, is a good friend of Beaver Island.

Guide Kevin Morlock plans to work out of Beaver next year all of July & August and become a member of our Chamber of Commerce.

It has been many years since we had a sport fishing guide working here. The Carp and improving sm Bass offer good potential for the future.

Carp are fun fish

Post by TjD »

A friend of mine just spent a week out here and the focus of his entertainment was carp spearing. He had a great time skin diving with his mask, snorkel, fins, and spear. Of course catch and release doesn't seem the same after using a spear.

Did he eat what he speared? Most of the world thinks carp are very good to eat. Kind of a bland white fish much like Whitefish.

Kevin, the guide, uses a fly rod with 12lb test leader. Carp of 25-30 pounds are common.

"Carp is the most widely eaten fish in the world" A good article on carp fishing & eating: http://www.big-river.com/br.story.a.html

Roasted Carp with Onion

I've only eaten carp smoked & pickled, both are excellent. They make good fertilizer for the garden too.

I would hope the island's new guide would enforce a no take limit on all spieces for his clients. However, if one is promoting spear fishing that may create a challenge.
Our once abundent small mouth fishery is barley managing to regain a foothold
Buy all your eating fish and support our one local island commercial fisherman.
Return others, to be caught by us again and thereby also supporting our our new guide's efforts to have his fishing clients return and catch fish, again.
And then again....and again.
Mortality rates are as low as 10% for fish properly handled and returned to the water.
If we do not all hang together,
we will all hang separately,

The Chamber of Commerce provided photos for the feature.
