The Charlevoix County Commission on Aging Advisory Board monthly meeting for May will take place on Beaver Island at the BIC Center in the Hangout on Monday, May 15th at 10am. This is an open meeting and all are welcome to attend. Coffee and mini-muffins provided!
Additionally, Roman Hank, the Assistant Director and Administrator of the Beaver Island Reimbursement Program will be available to meet with individuals to answer their questions and concerns regarding the program, and assist with enrollment from 1:00 to 2:30pm. This is an opportunity to meet one-on-one to get your individual questions and concerns addressed as well as get personal assistance with enrollment.

Yes, many of us continue to be frustrated with the lack of response by the Commission on Aging (COA) but we need to attend their monthly meeting-tomorrow-Monday, at 10 a.m. at the Community Center. If we don't have adequate in-home services, it makes aging in place on Beaver Island impossible.
Since last October, our island community has gone through at least 3 revisions of the COA reimbursement program. This is the first opportunity for islanders to meet face to face with the COA board and again ask questions that were raised at previous public meetings and submitted in letters but never answered by COA.
At the last island community COA meeting, we were told that there would be no income eligibility requirement for the program. Islanders are very concerned with the amount of personal financial information that is being requested. This has led to individuals refusing to apply. We feel that if COA is truly interested in serving our seniors, that request for information should be removed since eligibility is not based on income, and services/reimbursements are not subject to a sliding scale.
It was agreed that seasonal county taxpayers would also be eligible for reimbursement. That provision seems to have disappeared.
What are the new residency requirements?
How and when should islanders contact COA when in need of in-home services?
What is the date to re-evaluate the reimbursement program?
Some elderly on fixed incomes do not have the funding to pay up front and wait 2-3 weeks for reimbursement. Has there been a change in reimbursement?
Shirley Gillespie and Nancy Ferguson stated that â??skilled medical services will be referred to the Beaver Island Rural Health Centerâ?. COA and Ferguson were to get back to the community on this issue but they have not.
