Caroline Kenwabikise Ramey RIP

Post by Marie LaFreniere »

Caroline Stella Ramey (Kenwabikise), 82, passed peacefully at home on January 25, 2024, in Benzonia, Michigan. Caroline was born to Paul Kenwabikise and Isabell (Wabanimkee) Kenwabikise on June 18, 1941, in St. James, Michigan.

Caroline grew up on Beaver Island with her six brothers and seven sisters. She loved hunting, fishing and camping with her family. Caroline was known for her beautiful Native American artwork and for spending many hours sewing regalia for her family. She shot blackpowder and traveled to many different rendezvous around the state with her husband and family. Caroline loved to garden and her love for lawn ornaments were something spectacular each summer. She touched so many people’s lives! In her last eighteen years of life, Caroline and her husband spent their winters in Zolfo Springs Florida and loved sitting around the camp fire with their friends.

Caroline always stressed the importance of taking care of the children of the family as her mother had taught her. The knowledge she shared and the love she had was un-measurable. Caroline always made sure everyone had a full belly and welcomed everyone with open arms and warm heart.

Caroline was preceded in death by: both her parents; her brothers, Johnny, Leonard, Robbie, Stevie, and Jimmy; and her sisters, Nancy Harris, Margaret Way, Sarah Bray, Doris Kenwabikise, and Diane Smith; along with other family members.

Caroline is survived by: her husband of 49 years, Orville Ramey; her sisters, Pauline Anthony and Mary Kenwabikise; her brother, Joey Kenwabikise; one uncle, Patrick (Virginia) Wabanimkee; and her children, Marty (Becky) Newstead, Linda Ramey & Scott, Orville "Jim" (Mary Cris) Ramey, Sandra (Sean) Jewell, and Sally (Dean) Rook. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren: Alan, Christine, Troy, Tyler, Trevor, Shelby, Orville, Isabella, Korin, Kayla; and her sixteen great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life and Luncheon will be held at the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Tribal Center on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 2pm. 7282 Hoadley Rd, Benzonia, MI 49616.

A portion of her ashes will be spread over St. James Harbor at a later date surrounded by her family.

The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home, in Beulah, is in charge of arrangements.
