Rich-

I certainly hope this doesn't surprise you. Why should it? No one in politics walks the walk. They only talk the talk. Economic frugality? Democracy? Doesn't matter. No one is going to do what needs to be done if they think it might cost them a vote. Yes, the state needs to make cuts and tighten the belt, but there is another equally large deficit predicted for the next fiscal year as well. There has to be a tax change also. Someone proposed dropping all business taxes (who pays those anyway but us?) and the income tax while raising the sales tax to 9.5% with a rebate built in for those below a certain income level. I don't know enough to know whether or not that would work, but it's time to try something different.
Aint it?

I think that we are sunk in many respects and that the parties only care about themselves and not the constituents!! I care less which one is in power if they stay in the middle of the road, not going to happen!! I said to a friend not so long ago that George W. was spending money like a Democrat to which he replied, of course, the party in power needs to do so to stay that way. Have to agree although it would be nice to reset both parties and have a fresh start, not likely to happen. This kind of sums it up:

Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table
At which he's fed.

Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes
Are the rule.

Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.

Tax his ties,
Tax his shirt,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.

Tax his cigars,
Tax his beers,
If he cries, then
Tax his tears.

Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass

Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won't be done
Till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers,</ B>
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
He's good and sore.

Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he's laid.

Put these words
upon his tomb,
"Taxes d rove me
to my doom..."

When he's gone,
Do not relax,
Its time to apply
The inheritance! tax.

in the world, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.
What happened?
I'll tell you what happened. We started taking care of everyone else,
and forgot our own.
And I still have to "press 1" for English

In San Francisco, your trash pickup is not included in your taxes. You have to hire and pay the one approved company to pick up your trash. No one else is allowed to pick up trash. The city recently passed a $15 annual "permit" fee for placing one trashcan on a city sidewalk for one 24-hour period each week. Each home has 3 trashcans (one for trash, one for recyclables and one for compost) by law, so your annual sidewalk occupation fee is $45. What happens if you put your trashcans at the edge of your driveway but not on the sidewalk? The trash company will not pick them up! They have to be placed "curbside on the sidewalk" to be emptied.

This in a city where the sales tax is 8.5% and the state income tax is 9.8%.

Two recent examples of our state governments' lack of efficiency.

1. MESC Office simultaneously sent us two notices saying that they had not recieved last quarters payment and report and at the same time sent us the current quarters report that shows last quarters credited payment and a balance of zero. Upon reporting the former to MESC personnel they were indignant and asked for further proof that the payment had been applied. The cancelled check was not enough to satisfy them and we had to send them the completed form from the last quarter which they had already processed since they had cashed the check and shown no carryover balance to this quarter on their form. She said that just because the check was cashed it doesn't mean they got it!?!?!?!?

2. Testing of private fish farmers for Viral Hemmorraghic Septiciemia, a disease that has been found in the great lakes. After recieving a schematic of a small fish farmers farm, Government veterinarians have conducted two meetings involving several state veterinarians and will conduct a site visit with two other state veterinarians and then run their test plan by the DNR before they can tell me how many of this farmers fish must be tested so he can sell fish legally. You see the state had to privatize testing of fish since they didnt have enough money in the new budget to conduct the testing themselves!?!? I guess driving and visiting fish farms around the state is still in the new budget!!

It is no wonder with the above examples the state of Michigan is broke. If we all were this inefficient in our businesses their would not be a private sector to tax in the first place.
