Icing

Post by WVBI »

While our programing continues at www.wvbi.net, we are off the air on FM due to severe icing on the island. This will likely continue through the night. We apologize for any inconvenience.

You can listen online using the player bar on the bottom pane of our website, using the TuneIn app or website, or by asking your Amazon Echo or other smart speaker to "Play WVBI."

Back

Post by WVBI »

Enough ice has come off our antenna that we are back to transmitting on FM, but at reduced power. We'll get back to full power as soon as we can. The problem with ice is that it causes the power we send up to the antenna to be "reflected" right back down to the transmitter (where it can cause damage). But, we having no internet icing issues, so if you aren't able to hear us on FM, you can listen online at www.wvbi.net.

Be sure to tune in this morning after the news at 9:00 a.m. to hear our Community Calendar with Greg Doig. He'll have information about any closings plus word on traffic (both inbound and outbound) from the airports from our traffic drone (unless it, too, is grounded due to ice).

Webcam View

BTW, there is still a fair amount of ice out there. Here's the "view" from the WVBI E.J. Hodgson Enterprises Webcam at the BIC Center:

You can catch a current view at the bottom of website or on our webcams page: http://wvbi.biccenter.org/webcams.

Full Power Restored

Post by WVBI »

The warm weather today has finally melted the ice off our antenna, so we have returned to full power (and the area below our antenna and tower is full off ice shards).
