The 2017 Beaver Island Burris Stonework Project

Greetings from the 2017 Burris Stonework Project Team:

Amy Burris
Dick Burris
Mark Englesman
Carol Linteau
Frank Solle
Mike Weede

We are collecting pictures, stories and locations of the beautiful natural stone and brick work done by Dick Burris over the past 50 years. Amy Burris tended for Dick over the past 20 plus years, and has been invaluable in recalling sites, details and stories about some of the most amazing work. Prior to that, Dave Gladdish, Perry Fortier, Ross Henderson, Mariam Sawim, Amy Munger, Karl Bartels and many others worked with Dick to create the lasting art we see all over Beaver Island today.

If you - or someone you know - has stonework done by Dick Burris, we would love to hear about it. Please send us an email (address below), with pictures if you have them, sharing your story. We would like to know what Burris structures are on the property, when construction occurred, who owned the property when the work was done, address, phone, and stories you may wish to share.

We are planning a website to house the stonework photos and information, plus Dick’s many dive adventures and many published stories. We look forward to sharing that soon. Once that is done, we hope to publish a simple book with the best of the Burris work. Other ideas include recording related stories on WVBI.

During the past week, Amy, Dick and Carol got the project started by visiting several of the Burris stonework sites. Special thanks for the warm receptions we received from so many – none of whom were expecting us: Earl and Beryl McHenry, Dave and Mary Kempker, Lenor Jacobson, Pam and Brad Grassmick, Patrick and Janet O’Callahan.

Please spread the word. We would love to hear from you.

Please email us at: Burris.stonework@gmail.com

Here’s to a great summer on Beaver Island!
- The Team

It was a delight to see Dick and meet Carol. Dick did our fireplace, chimney and house foundation and Lawrence's house in Charlevoix as well as a grotto for Winnie that's in the cemetery now. He put a heart shaped stone in the center of our fireplace. He's an artist in stone! An island treasure!
