From Cherie Browe-Election Results

Post by I'm Just The Messenger »

CHARLEVOIX â?? Charlevoix County election officials delayed the expected
certification of Tuesday's primary results because three votes turned up
missing.Canvas Board members failed to certify the entire county's primary
election results Wednesday afternoon when they discovered paperwork from
Beaver Island's St. James Township didn't match up with figures phoned in
late the previous night. Township election officials flew to the mainland
today, Thursday, Aug. 9, to sort out where the problem happened."I'm
coming to Charlevoix today with two of my election inspectors to see if we
can figure out where the discrepancy is. You know every number has to be
perfect," said Jean Wierenga, St. James Township clerk and top township
election official. Results from Tuesday's election weren't finalized until
nearly midnight because the island township's numbers didn't automatically
transfer to the county clerk, as usual. The modem apparently failed on the
township's tabulation equipment."The numbers were late coming in because
they had machine issues," said Cheryl Potter Browe, county clerk. "They
called the totals in to us and we had to hand enter them into our computer
system."The hiccup came when the election paperwork arrived Wednesday from
Beaver Island, flown to the mainland among the first available morning
flights just a matter of hours after polls closed the prior night. Now
township election officials were expected to catch among the first
available morning flights to Charlevoix today."They are going to be
sorting it out until they figure out the discrepancy and why it happened,"
Browe said. "Legally we have five days to finish the canvas, so we are not
in violation. You have to start the canvas by 1 p.m. the day after the
election, but have five days to finish. We just don't normally take more
than one day."Both Browe and Wierenga said they expect the solution to be
easy enough to discern."It could be a simple answer," Browe said."I'm sure
we'll put our heads together and quickly resolve it," Wierenga said. The
county's canvas board is expected to meet again Friday morning in a second
attempt to certify county-wide election results.

Bill Haggard declared winner of St. James Township Supervisor primary race!

They left here and all is well. There was one ballot marked as spoiled
and it was not, and one was recorded in the pollbook that should not have
as it was an AV envelope that was returned with no ballot in it. The 3rd
problem was a math issue only.

Results did not change.
