Like so many of us on the island this morning, I was watering the garden. A humming bird seemed like he wanted a drink of the water, so I sprayed the leaves and branches of a Juneberry tree. I thought that since flying insects get a drink of water that way, perhaps the humming bird would also. But he didn't go for it.
I happened to change the spray nozzle from jet to gentle spray. Not a fine mist, but not as sloppy as gentle shower either. As I was watering some Polemonium, the humming bird flew into the spray and hovered there about 2 feet from my hand! He was taking a bath! He stayed there for about 5 - 10 seconds and then flew to a nearby cedar branch to preen himself.
What a wonderful world.
