Island Teamwork!

Island Teamwork!

In a joint effort, with CMU, to replace a broken pulley system on the flag pole atop the old Coast Guard tower, now owned by CMU, Doug Tilly, Darrell Butler, Ron and Jim Wojan began their task of investigating, to see what needed to be done. Doug Tilly and Darrell Butler arrived first and wearing a safety harness, Doug climbed the tower to try and determine what steps they would need to take to bring the, already bent, flag pole down and replace the broken pulley system so a new flag could be flown. Doug noticed that there was a lot of corrosion and several bolts were missing. At 11:00 am, the rest of the crew arrived and using Ron Wojan's lift they went up to do a further assessment. Due to the corrosion, the flag pole would only slide down part way. After hours of attempts to free up the pole the decision was made to replace the flange bracket so that if problems ever arose in the future, the pole could be lowered in an easier fashion. The corroded flange was removed and using two cable come-alongs, the pole was safely lowered and tied off until the top weathervane and pulley system can be removed so that the pole can be fully lowered to the ground and the repairs can be made. Plans are being made to paint the flag pole as well as the repairs and upgrades. It was a pleasure to be present while these dedicated guys worked together and did what was needed to get these repairs started. Thanks guys, great job!

Doug removed the weathervane off of the top of the flag pole and the guys brought the pole down and transported it to where it will be repaired.
