more apple tips

Just returned from a weekend on the island, staying on East Side Drive a wee bit south of the Jordan River. Friday was a lovely day and we walked "the big square" (East Side Drive to Hannigan's, to King's Hwy, to McCauleys back to East Side Drive). Found some very nice apples along Hanniga...

apples

We found some old trees near Protar's Cabin, on the other side of the road. You can (and should) spend a pleasant day apple hunting on the island. I'm sure others will have helpful suggestions as well. Happy hunting!

favorite beach

Tough question....there are so many beaches, each delightful in its own way. If I was forced to pick which one in my humble opinion is BEST, I would have to say Sand Bay is my absolute favorite. Very easy on bare feet once you get past the first yard or so of rocks, a sandbar or two, spectacular sun...

Bill Wagner campground

I concur with the first person who responded, except re: the beach. It's just south of the place we rent, and I would not describe the beach as stony. Maybe the stretch a few feet out from the waterline is a little stony, but before and after that, it's all sand.

A bit of blue humor for a blue Christmas

A young woman in Charlevoix was so depressed that she decided to end her life by throwing herself into Round Lake. As she walked across the drawbridge and was about to leap into the frigid water, a handsome young sailor saw her tottering on the rail, crying. He took pity on her and said, "Look,...

Ireland trip

Daggone computers! I just composed a lengthy reply that my computer ate. What it said (in lots more words) was that my family of 5 is saving for an early summer 2011 trip to the Emerald Isle. My 12 year old son announced last summer that he wanted to travel to Ireland for a h.s. graduation present. ...

Hi, Hannah!

Sounds like your life continues to be interesting. I contacted you via this website before. In addition to having been a frequent visitor to the island for the past almost 20 years, I'm an old pal (former student and old pal) of your dad's. How's he doing? I see the occasional clipping from the Flin...

We have Alltel, and were able to get a signal a good bit of the time while on the island this summer.

Re: leadership quotes

No argument intended. I think either or both is/are accurate:

If you're not confused, you're not paying attention
If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention.

But I AM paying attention, and I'm outraged AND confused...more the former than the latter.

Re: leadership quotes

I heard it as "If you're not OUTRAGED, you're not paying attention." Saw that on a bumper sticker on the island this summer, as a matter of fact. :cussing:

Garrison Keillor

I read this and was reminded what a bright and articulate man Mr. Keillor is. He is going to be at CMU (in Mt. Pleasant) on 11/30, if anyone wants to make the drive.

cellular phone service

While we were staying on the island during the middle part of this month I used my cell phone almost exclusively and found it worked quite well. (Better than at home, in fact, but I live in the middle of a cell phone "dead zone", so that's not saying much.) I live in the 989 area code and ...
