Hi Frank -- Thanks for the reply. About when did the Roundtrees own it? I got really excited the other night when Marie alerted me to those postings, as well, but unfortunately for me, my certification is in elementary education. If the island ever needs an elementary school teacher, though, watch m...

Hi Marie -- I'm glad to hear that. Perhaps someday I will have an opportunity to see it for myself. Who knows when, but Beaver Island is definitely on my list of places to visit... or re-visit... once I've saved some money. (Need any fresh, young teachers on Beaver Island? Didn't think so. ) ...

An island home of yore...

Do any of you islanders recognize this house? Is it still standing? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/ragtimematt/family/heaven.jpg For a time, it was the home of Arthur and Ethel Miller, my great-great grandparents. (I believe it may have overlooked the harbor?) I'm certain Heaven is just like ...

Holy Cross Cemetery...

Greetings, Beaver Islanders! Does anybody here visit Holy Cross Cemetery? I was hoping I might be able to please impose upon some kind soul who could take a photo of the gravestones of my great-grandparents, George & Martha Miller. If there is any way I could reciprocate, I'd be glad to do so. (...

Nevermind!

Well, nevermind that. The answer to my question was plainly imprinted in the header of most of the issues of The Beaver Beacon I browsed in the archives in Lansing today. http://i5.tinypic.com/20r2nts.jpg Thanks, anyway! ============= Loved the report about the first robin in February, 1971... very...

The sort of now-obscure social briefs that used to be a staple of small town newspapers of yore. (i.e. "Mr. and Mrs. John Smith are entertaining friends from Anytown, USA.") Gossip, basically. My great-great grandparents (Arthur & Ethel Miller) lived on the island for a while. If there...

Before 1955 and the "Beaver Beacon"...

...Were there any other newspapers on the island? I see from the Library of Michigan's catalogue there was a Northern Islander in the 1850's, but that's way off for the information I want. Anything in the 1940's?

Thanks!

George & Martha Miller...

...were my great grandparents, and even though I remember barely anything about them aside from what I have heard from my mother, I felt pride at seeing their names here: http://www.beaverisland.net/History/Newsletter_Archive/Spring_98_News/spring_98_news.htm I can vaguely recall visiting the island...
