When Phyllis Higman was here for the forestry/wildlife symposium she showed me an invasive thistle here on Beaver Island. Since then, I have seen it all over the island, even out my kitchen window. This thistle only flowers once so if we cut the flower heads off the thistle for a few years we could ...

Bird Watching - Song Bird Habitat on Beaver
One of the speakers at the Community Center on June 28th is Kay Charter. In February of 1993, Kay and her husband purchased 47 acres of mixed habitat in Leelanau County. There they established a sanctuary for migrating and nesting birds.
To Quote Kay, â??While we took this action because it was clear the birds we love were losing ground at an accelerating pace, we had little idea about how to improve this land for the benefit of the birds we cared about. Although we are not ornithologists, biologists or botanists, we have both learned much over the course of those seventeen years about the birds of northern Michigan and their required habitats. Since establishing Charter Sanctuary, we have hosted more than sixty nesting species on our property. With an impressive bird list and a variety of habitats, Beaver Island has an opportunity to manage its forests with an eye to maintaining, or even increasing, its avian nesting populations.â?
Kay will be speaking from about 11:55 until the 12:30 lunch break. If you have an interest in songbirds, bird watching, or are wanting to know ways to improve your property for songbird habitat please join us. This event on June 28th is FREE and was developed by the Natural Resource and Eco Tourism Commission
