Re: Driving The Island Roads Safely!
A couple of quick additional comments and then I'm on to issues with Door County, WI. What I determine to be a safe speed for conditions may be very different than what you determine to be a safe speed. Always best to have it be definitive, Speed Limit XX. Caution signs only work for the cautious. A...

Re: Driving The Island Roads Safely!
Beanie, I respect your opinion and appreciate your humor. Sadly I believe you are correct in your assumption. My take as a now casual observer is that the island might have an inherent problem with laws and authority. At least with posted speeds for everyone to be aware of the law and the dangers, i...

Re: Driving The Island Roads Safely!
Joe Moore uses excellent logic in his presentation. However drivers kill, while speed contributes. You can legislate speed limits but not common sense of drivers. Change the posted speed limits on the island where necessary. Don't leave it to the discretion of the driver as to what is safe. If I wer...

Re: Driving The Island Roads Safely!
As I recall from my own concerns when we would visit, any unmarked (speed limit) road on Beaver Island is legally 55mph. Seems a little fast for people and animals. Not sure who Amy is but it might be a safer place if everyone did drive like her.

Re: Phones for Electric Outages
When we stayed on the island the cottage had a landline with TDS who provides voice mail through the phone line not dependent on power or back up source. Things might have changed since we've been there. Worth checking out with TDS.

Re: Telephone Pole Theft
Looks like it might be the Great Scottish Caber Caper of Beaver Island. I trust the State Police will nail the polecat who took them. Somewhat hard to drive down the road with 25 ft. utility poles sticking out the back of your trailer and not be seen. Take if from a chemical engineer, burning treate...

Re: Perceived wisdom on coywolves/wolves on beaver Island?
Steve,
Sorry, I thought you or the Chamber were proposing coyote hunts on Beaver Island. if I understand it, your proposal is that deer hunters silently shoot the coyotes and not reporting it for DNA analysis. But how does that determine if there are hybrids on the island?

Re: Perceived wisdom on coywolves/wolves on beaver Island?
Steve, I remember reading about your documentation in the paper a few years ago. Was it you or someone else that suggested coyote hunts on Beaver Island as a means to attract hunters and display them on hanging poles? Did that every materialize? I would think by killing them and extracting DNA could...

Re: Perceived wisdom on coywolves/wolves on beaver Island?
I remember a few years ago that Steve West from the Chamber of Commerce and avid outdoorsman documented a coyote/wolf hybrid at the south end of the island. I don't recall whether it was confirmed with pictures or DNA. I think he has since moved from the island but it would be interesting to contact...

Re: First Time Visitor - Recs
Another suggestion just came to mind. You might want to check out the Community Center and the Mormon Print Shop Museum for island information on things to do and see. We found those locations a bit better and friendlier source of information than the Chamber where some of our friends had less than ...

Re: First Time Visitor - Recs
This tread brings back great memories of our family spending several 4th of Julys on Beaver Island. We are now On The Door as they say here in Wisconsin. Things are slow but opening the right way with caution. Hope all is well across the lake and people are staying safe as visitors return. I would s...

Re: WTH
Let me begin with we love Beaver Island, always have, always will. We spent several years there over 4th of July week with family and friends. Home is the western subs of Chicago and we now have a summer home in Sister Bay, Wisconsin on the Door Peninsula and near Washington Island. I think people h...

Re: FOR A CONSOLIDATED BEAVER ISLAND TOWNSHIP
As many of you know we were going to retire on Beaver Island but have made the decision not to in part because of what is playing out with the consolidation issue among others. I have received many messages from, for a lack of better term, "Islanders" thanking me for attempting to address ...

The "IT" Factor
I wasn't going to post this after being told I have no right or business expressing my opinions involving Beaver Island but thought this might be a timely positive inspiration for the future of Beaver Island. I met a realtor on Washington Island, WI recently who has been to Beaver Island and is quit...
