School Board Nominees - My Husband's Opinion

First of all I would like to state that my opinions on the following matter stems from my several years of serving on the Beaver Island Community School Board.
During the last few weeks Iâ??ve been asked this question many times: â??What the heck is going on at the school?â?￾ With all the information, rumors, opinions, misinformation, and accusations that are swirling around, itâ??s hard to figure out whatâ??s what. What are the issues? Who is right? Does it really matter or is just another silly spat?
Iâ??ve taken a closer look at whatâ??s going on, and because it really does matter, decided to communicate with you. The Beaver Island Community School is one of the Islandâ??s most important, essential institutions. It shapes the future prospects of our communityâ??s children and youth. It brings together multiple generations in events and provides jobs and contracts for Island residents. The community has long been united in supporting the schoolâ??taxing itself to build a new facility, participating in events, mentoring students, and contributing in other ways.
In the last couple of years, however, the elected school Board realized that the school needed to improve the academic performance of students, strengthen the curriculum, increase the accountability of the schoolâ??s teachers and administrator, while also investing in upgrading technology for everyone in the school community. The Board hired a new superintendent to initiate these changes, understanding that it would take a few years for improvements to take hold. In response, there has been support and there has been opposition, within the school and across the community. Some of the concerns are well intentioned, others are just resistance to change. Some Board members have been verbally assaulted because of their decisions. Malicious rumors have been spread. Unfounded accusations have been made. Frankly, it has been ugly, disgusting, and disturbing.
And now, on November 4, Election Day, the community will be selecting six new Board members. Thatâ??s six out of the Board's seven seatsâ??nearly the entire Board will be replaced. That means that the schoolâ??s leadership for the coming years will be decided in this election. And whatâ??s at stake is whether the effort to improve the schoolâ??s performance and increase accountability of school employees will continue or be reversed. Itâ??s not an exaggeration to say that this election matters a great deal for every Islander.
I urge you to vote. Donâ??t let the confusing swirl of rumors, gossip, anger, and mischief keep you from voting.
And I urge you to vote for candidates who have an open mind and the whole communityâ??s best interests at heart, for candidates who listen well to all parties, can work well with others, and use common sense to make decisions that will help make the school what the Island needs it to be. I know you can make up your own mind about who to support. But I want you to know which candidates I am confident can provide the sort of leadership the school needs.

There are three four-year or â??full termâ?￾ seats. I recommend these candidates who would make good Board members: Susan Myers, Janet Nank, Kathy Speck, and Angel Welke. (You can only vote for three of them.)
There are also three two-year seats on the ballot, called "Partial Term Ending 12/31/2016." I recommend two write-in candidates for these seats: Dustin Cushman and Angela Kohls. To vote for them you have to write in their names in the correct place on the ballot and fill in the oval next to the name. (If you donâ??t fill in the oval, your vote wonâ??t be counted.)

Below I provide brief biographies and contact information for these candidates. If you have any questions, please call one or more of them.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
